Quick Reference
Fishable Flow Range

Currently 76 CFS at Tahoe City, 220 CFS at Glenshire, 503 CFS at Farad. 75-300 CFS typical in upper sections, 200-600 CFS in the Reno area. Low flows require technical presentations.

Optimal Temperature

Currently 40-45°F depending on time of day. 45-60°F optimal. Lake Tahoe releases keep upper sections cool. Lower sections can warm in summer.

Trend Notes

Abnormally warm, dry January produced excellent fishing conditions river-wide from Tahoe City to USA Parkway. A major storm system is forecast for mid-February which may temporarily increase flows and reduce clarity. Rainbows are beginning to stage for their spring spawn.

Clarity

Clear throughout the system right now. The Hwy 89 section near Tahoe City is ultra-clear with spooky fish requiring long leaders and finesse. Post-storm conditions can produce off-color water with a blue-green hue through the Reno corridor.

What "Fishable" Means Here

Fishable when flows stabilize below 400 CFS with good visibility. The Truckee rewards technical anglers with quality wild trout. Urban proximity means fishing pressure—early mornings and weekdays are best.

Seasonal Patterns

March through June sees high runoff making fishing difficult. Late spring can offer windows of opportunity as flows drop. Watch snowpack forecasts for timing.

July through September offers good dry fly fishing. Caddis, PMDs, and terrestrials produce. Fish early morning to avoid crowds and heat. The Little Truckee provides an excellent alternative.

October through November is prime time. Flows are low, fish are aggressive, and crowds thin significantly. BWOs and streamers produce well. Many consider this the best season.

Technical fishing at its finest. Low flows (75-150 CFS upper, 400-500 CFS at Farad) demand light tippet and precise presentations. Midges and small nymphs through slow pools. BWO hatches on mild afternoons can produce excellent dry fly windows, especially east of Reno. Indicator fishing through deep pools or swinging leeches are top methods. Expect 3-4 fish days. No bait, no kill regulations in effect through April 22nd.
